The check-engine light is the most misunderstood light on the dash. It doesn't mean the engine is about to fail, and it doesn't mean nothing's wrong either. It means the engine computer saw something outside the range it expected and stored a code about it.
Steady versus flashing
A steady light means a fault has been detected and recorded. Finish your trip, book it in within the week, and pay attention to how the vehicle is running. A flashing light means an active misfire severe enough to damage the catalytic converter. Pull over when it's safe, shut it off, and call. Driving on a flashing light can turn a $150 coil into a $2,000 converter.
The gas cap thing is real
A loose or worn gas cap lets vapour out of the fuel system, and the EVAP monitor will eventually flag it. If the light came on right after you filled up, tighten the cap until it clicks and give it a few drives. If it stays on, there's something else.
Why a free code read isn't a diagnosis
The parts store will read your code for free and hand you a list of parts. The code says which test failed, not which part failed. A P0300 random misfire can be plugs, coils, injectors, a vacuum leak, low compression or a fuel pressure problem. A P0420 catalyst efficiency code is often an exhaust leak or a lazy oxygen sensor, not the converter. Replacing parts off a code list is how people spend eight hundred dollars and still have the light on.
What a proper diagnosis looks like
- Read the codes and the freeze-frame data (what the engine was doing when the fault happened)
- Look at live data while the engine runs: fuel trims, oxygen sensor response, misfire counters
- Test the suspect circuit or component directly with a scope, a smoke machine or a pressure gauge
- Confirm the fix clears the code and the monitors run to completion
